Need a limited access retaining wall? Try a Retained Earth Cell Wall

Cell Wall by Retained Earth allows for installation on situations where there are typically only solutions such as rock fall protection and shotcrete as the construction footprint required is minimal.

There are many sites with little to no access where the Cell Wall system can outperform other options such as shotcrete and rockfall protection.

Expansion Joint Systems for New Zealand’s Seismic Building and Design Changes

By inherently factoring all aspects of the new seismic design and assessment criteria reflected in the Building (Earthquake-prone Buildings) Amendment Act 2016, which introduced major changes to the way earthquake-prone buildings are identified and managed under the Building Act 2004 throughout New Zealand, the joint systems Facade Interaction Joint utilises unique manufacturing and design to encapsulate and protect entire building facade envelopes from the effects of fire, wind and acoustics whilst compensating for thermal (low range) and seismic (high range) movement.

joint systems, in conjunction with some of the world’s leading architectural designers and product specialists, developed the Facade Interaction System specifically for the new changes to the Building Act (Amendment) in 2014 by adding a new level of acoustic performance to Preformed Polyurethane Expansion Joints. The Amendment in 2016 has been added after several years of strong seismic activity with the Public’s safety in mind.

The recent changes addresses New Zealand’s “Degrees of Seismicity” as they reflect three seismic risk areas or zones, and sets time frames for identifying and taking action to strengthen or to remove earthquake-prone buildings entirely.

The Advantages of the retained earth CellWall™ Gravity Retaining Wall System

The retained earth CellWall™ system is a mass-gravity type retaining wall array that is comprised of cast reinforced concrete units, formed to specific size and dimension, which are then combined by utilising our proprietary construction methods.

By controlling design, manufacturing and installation, retained earth focus the ‘bulk density’ approach to the retaining and stabilisation of slopes and embankments. Our system, in its unique composition, performs specifically for high deflection situations as required for sea walls, rail bridges and road-side retaining structures such as bridge abutments and grade separations.

The CellWall™ system is perfect for sites with soft soils, rock foundations and sites with limited access.

Walls such as crib walls and gabions (see pictures below), which also are designed and constructed utilising the mass-gravity method, perform very well in their functions but still allow scour to occur. The retained earth CellWall™ system, eliminates the risk of scour by adding density to our design block.

This simple solution reduces voids in the block and therefore is also very effective at controlling the establishment of vegetation in the face of the wall structure. This, when it occurs on similar mass-gravity structures, can cause further costs for private and public assets.

With no large root masses invading the wall structure, the CellWall™ system will outperform alternative gravity wall systems.

Want to maximise your usable land? Try a retained earth retaining wall

When working with an earthmoving company, you may hear the terminology “cut & fill”. This basically means as it sounds; some areas of work are to be excavated which is indicated by the word ‘cut’ and other areas that are to be filled, and well, you know the rest.

By doing this in a certain way, you can maximize the amount of usable, and more possibly, load bearing land in which an extension or another structure can be built on to increase the overall value of your block. This is even more critical for older blocks that have matured but nonetheless it is also a widely occurring function when building on a new block.

Concrete retaining walls by retained earth help to provide a long lasting and aesthetically appealing option when considering the various types of retaining systems on the market. Our systems utilise both cantilever anchorage and gravity itself as a means to secure an area of fill. In saying this, we also have cut zone ready retaining systems.
